Purpose of European Colonies: 1. To establish control over a new area of land. 2. To get raw resources for a European country (Britain - land for agricultural resources, France – furs) 3. Mercantilism – economic system to make a country rich (buy cheap resources from the colony, make into expensive goods to sell) 4. To have a monopoly (complete control over a resource in an area) 5. To have a closer base to return to when looking for Asia
How French and British Imperialism Differed: SHORT ANSWER!: British wanted land for farming – saw FN as obstacles to be pushed aside, French wanted furs – saw FN as partners to help them get what they wanted, also wanted to convert them to Catholicism.
Similarities & Differences in French Colonies (New France) and British Colonies (Thirteen Colonies, Rupert’s Land): Population: Way larger in Thirteen Colonies. Government: New France - First monopolies set up but the colony was still dependent on France, so king set up Royal Gov’t (1663, Sovereign Council) to rule colony (encouraged more people to settle there) Thirteen Colonies – each colony had separate gov’t, elected assemblies Religion: New France - Catholic, 13 Colonies - Protestant Economy: New France - fur trade, 13 Colonies - agriculture 13 Colonies More Successful Colonies than New France: (Why More Successful Chart) – know reasons
Impact of Colonization on First Nations: Pressures from the fur trade War Epidemics Evangelization (pressure to convert) and how that affected the FN Decreased population Loss of identity Loss of spirituality Dependence on European goods
Who's Who New France: Sovereign Council – governor, intendant, bishop - roles Soldiers & Officers - (officers were given seigneuries - land) Habitants – farmers who lived on seigneuries, duties (French peasants or soldiers) Short Answer Seigneurs – wealthy landowners, recruited habitants, duties Short Answer Filles du Roi – poor/orphaned girls sent to be wives (increase population) Coureur de Bois – independent fur trade workers Merchants – business owners, often worked in fur trade too Voyageurs – traveled back & forth from merchants to fur trade forts, worked for the fur trade companies Catholic Church & Clergy – moral direction, hospitals, orphanages, schools, kept records
Christian Worldview of Colonization and Evangelization: Matthew 28:16-20 – The Great Commission 1 Peter 3:15 – Share your faith with gentleness and respect Throughout the Old Testament, God called his people to go out into other parts of the world and occupy the lands he set apart for them, in the New Testament, Jesus instructed his disciples to go out into the world, share the gospel and teach people what he had taught them Also, remember what the Christian Worldview is regarding equality and how to treat others (from chapter 2) Early strategies to evangelize were insensitive because of ethnocentrism and a lack of understanding of FN society and spirituality (when we know better, we do better) These days, we do not practice imperialism so we would not be going out to dominate and conquer other lands
Hoped it has good. Good luck with the midterms!!
