MATTER- Anything that has mass and takes up space. (Do not confuse "matter" with "mass". There is a difference, described later on....)4 types of matter: Solid, liquid, gas, plasma.SUBSTANCE- A single kind of matter that is "pure" (meaning it always has a specific makeup, or composition)Ex.... The substance "Table Salt" has same composition whether it comes from saltwater or a salt mine.... The substance water, that is pure, is the same whether it comes from a glacier, geyser, or the steam from a hot shower.Other terms involved in this chapterRatio- The relationship between two or more things.Property- a characteristic that belongs to a person or thingMatter is described by its properties. EVERY form of matter has two kinds of properties: Physical and Chemical:PHYSICAL PROPERTIES- A characteristic of a substance that can be observed without changing it into another substance. Examples of such characteristic: texture, temperature, color, odor, reaction when introduced to other substances..... CHEMICAL PROPERTIES- A characteristic of a substance that describes its ability to change into different substances. Flammability (how easy to burn), freezing, oxidizing, combustion (amount of energy released when burnt), toxicity (how much damage and how quickly a substance affects an organism), radioactivity.Question: What famous landmark in New York City is a large example of a chemical effect listed above?Answer: The Statue of Liberty
