Overview of the design argument

Design is the result of intelligent thought The universe shows evidence of being designed (eg gravity) This suggests that a being of higher power created it to be so The universe is too complex to have been designed by anything other than God. Therefor God exists.

Comparing the design argument to a watch Paley compared the world to a watch A watch has so many parts that have been made and put together so successfully that it must have been planned and designed. Paley argued the same of the universe saying it could not have happened by chance and must have had a creator. Therefor God exists

Arguments against Design Theory

We cannot possibly prove god exists and the design theory only suggests that he is the designer The appearance of design could actually be the result of evolution: the scientific theory that everything has evolved and everything only has the appearance of design

EVOLUTIONThe idea that species developed gradually over millions of years and adapted to their surroundings. For some evolution may suggest the appearance of design
