The dry mass of an organism is called its biomass. The total biomass at a particular step in a food chain is always less than the total biomass at the step before it.

This is a pyramid of numbers.

You can see that at the bottom the oak tree has a small bar. This is because although there is only 1 oak tree, it is heavy enough to support a lot of caterpillars

This is a pyramid of Biomass

There is only one oak tree here, but because it is so heavy and has a lot of mass it has a large bar.
