Biology 3.1.1 How spirometers work

When a spirometer is used, a person breaths in and out of an [blank_start]enclosed[blank_end] air [blank_start]chamber[blank_end]

When a person breaths in, the volume of air in the chamber [blank_start]decreases[blank_end], casusing the float to move [blank_start]down[blank_end]

As the person breaths out, the volume of air in the chamber [blank_start]increases[blank_end] and the float goes [blank_start]up[blank_end]

The float is attached to a [blank_start]pen[blank_end] which writes onto a peice of paper, so the breaths are recorded as [blank_start]up[blank_end] and [blank_start]down[blank_end] lines on the paper

[blank_start]Soda[blank_end] [blank_start]lime[blank_end] water is preset so that when the person breaths out, the [blank_start]CO2[blank_end] in the air is absorbed and doesn't go back into the chamber
