PSY1 Mental health and stigma

Stigma – negative attitude based on [blank_start]prejudice and misinformation[blank_end] triggered by a marker of illness​ Often described as the [blank_start]main[blank_end] barrier to receiving effective mental healthcare​ Adverse effects of stigma well documented and well known – lead to [blank_start]delays[blank_end] in help-seeking, [blank_start]lowered[blank_end] self-esteem, social withdrawal, poor self-care and [blank_start]substance[blank_end] abuse​

Minority groups in society commonly report experiences with [blank_start]racism and discrimination[blank_end] - Studies show this adversely affects [blank_start]mental and physical[blank_end] health​. Therefore, [blank_start]minorities[blank_end] become an AT RISK group for mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety​.
