The change from Biculturalism to Multiculturalism has occurred within [blank_start]100[blank_end] years.

Before the change to Multiculturalism in New Zealand. New Zealand was a Biculturalism society, having two ethnic groups populating the country, [blank_start]European and Maori[blank_end]

Such as prior to the [blank_start]1960’s[blank_end] most of the migrants and in the first [blank_start]150 years[blank_end] of New Zealand the population consisted to New Zealand were British.

New Zealand was considered as part of Britain and was [blank_start]colonised[blank_end] by europeans.

So adopted the ways of living traditions and religion from British society. Europeans were preferred as settlers and could adapt well to New Zealand life so were [blank_start]prioritised[blank_end] above other ethnicities when immigrating.

New Zealand’s population ethnicity makeup started to slowly began to change when a small number of [blank_start]Chinese, Hindu’s and Sikhs[blank_end] started to migrant during the 1860’s till the 1890’s.

Now we consider ourself as a multicultural nation and since the [blank_start]1860’s[blank_end] we have had more and more ethnic groups migrating into New Zealand.

Our population make-up has gone from being [blank_start]90% in 1976 to 67% European in 2006.[blank_end]

New Zealand now has many cultural festival’s over the course of the year such as the [blank_start]Cherry Blossom festival and Diwali[blank_end] festival of lights which attract people of many ethnicities drawing interest of the thousand and adding to New Zealand’s identity.

Another noticeable change is the number of different ethnic restaurants such as Chinese takeaway, Thai or Turkish kebab outlet’s, these eatery’s have contributed to the variety of food’s in New Zealand supermarkets and a chance to [blank_start]share the privileges of other cultures.[blank_end]

Reason for the change from Biculturalism to Multiculturalism in New Zealand included migrants beginning to be chosen, no matter what nationality [blank_start]they were, without favouritism.[blank_end]

In the [blank_start]1970’s[blank_end] New Zealand’s identity begun to change from a British nation to a pacific island nation as the huge influx of Pacific Island peoples who began migrating to live and work in New Zealand.

Asian students started to be allowed to study in New Zealand through the [blank_start]Colombo plan.[blank_end]

With an increase in nationalities in New Zealand to over [blank_start]300[blank_end], the racism increases too, because of some people not accepting the many countries involved through people, trigger’s of these opinion’s may be media playing a role in broadcasting strong cultural view’s of certain countries and ethnicities (that may no otherwise reflect every individual) or the traditional approaches of growing up.

By participating in the community and adding to the diversity of the city through, [blank_start]cultural and sporting initiatives,[blank_end] community support and city wide events.

One viewpoint of the consequence of Multiculturalism in our city, Palmerston North is the [blank_start]MMC (Manawatu Multicultural Council)[blank_end]
