Kinetic and potential energy

Kinetic energy is the energy a body has because of its motion.

For a body of mass [blank_start]m[blank_end] travelling with velocity [blank_start]v[blank_end], kinetic energy = [blank_start]E_k = 1/2mv^2[blank_end].

Potential energy is the energy a body has because of its position or condition.

potential energy = [blank_start]change in E_p = mgh[blank_end]

For a car, the braking distance is directly proportional to the square of the speed.
