Japan and the US

The US (one of the main Western powers) was interested in Japanese raid. They attempted to open relationships with Japan, in 1837 and 1846.  On July 8th of 1853, Commodore Perry arrived with various commercial agreements and promised to return to Japan's response. Japan's political leaders and the emperor's court agreed and signed the Treat of Kanagawa in March 1854 which established the US as the most-favoured-nation. This action led Japan to a rapid emergence. 

In 1858, Japan signed the Treaty of Amity and Commerce again with the US, decision that the imperial court opposed.  However Japan was pressured by other Western countries to open traits and sign similar treaties.
