ADVANCED VOCABULARY in English

When you learn English you realize that one thing is to learn vocabulary and set phrases and the other is to put them into practice, (and do it in the right context). The next step is to use advanced vocabulary in English, which allows you to get out of the most common phrases when you are learning English. In this curse you are going to learn some advanced English vocabulary words and expressions that will take your English to a higher level. Let's start!

EXPRESSIONS

Mull something over – Considerar algo, darle vueltas. Linda asked me if I wanted to go to Rome with her but I told her I would mull it over – Linda me preguntó si quería ir a Roma con ella pero le dije que lo pensaría. To hang out – Pasar tiempo en un lugar, tan solo estando con los amigos. My kids love to hang out with their friends at the park – A mis hijos les encanta pasar el tiempo con sus amigos en el parque. To be laid off – Perder el empleo porque la empresa reduce el número de trabajadores. Maria was laid off after 3 years working at that company – Maria perdió el empleo por reducción de plantilla después de 3 años trabajando en esa empresa. Taunt somebody – Burlarse de alguien. His friends taunt him for wearing flip-flops with socks – Sus amigos se burlan de él por llevar chanclas con calcetines. Raise objections to something – Poner peros/ pegas a algo. Katie always raises objections to my suggestions – Katie siempre pone pegas a mis sugerencias.

Delightful – Delicioso, encantador. The concert at the opera last night was absolutely delightful – El concierto en la ópera de ayer noche fue delicioso.   Furthermore – Es más, además. Talking is an excellent way to increase your vocabulary. Furthermore, it can help to improve your confidence – Hablar es una manera excelente de ampliar tu vocabulario. She speaks English very well, albeit with a strong Spanish accent – Ella habla inglés muy bien, aunque con un fuerte acento español.

Ten en cuenta que “Thus” es una palabra muy formal, por lo que deberás usarla sólo en algunos contextos. There was an unexpected storm, thus the football class was cancelled – Hubo una tormenta inesperada, por consiguiente la clase de fútbol fue cancelada.   Thoughtful – Considerado, que muestra interés por las necesidades o sentimientos de los demás. - Tom is really thoughtful, he always considers the opinions of others – Tom es muy considerado, siempre tiene en cuenta las opiniones de otros.

Gripping – Apasionante, emocionante, fascinante. This book is so gripping that I read it in just one night – Este libro es tan fascinante que me lo leí en una sola noche.   Utter – Completo, total, absoluto. Selling the company when business was about to take off was utter madness – Vender la empresa cuando el negocio estaba a punto de despegar fue una locura total.

Weary – Cansado, agotado. The teacher looked pale and weary after teaching the children for eight hours – El profesor estaba pálido y parecía agotado después de enseñar a los niños durante 8 horas.   Appalling – Pésimo, desastroso. The soup was cold and I found a cockroach in the bathroom. The whole experience was absolutely appalling – La sopa estaba fría y encontré una cucaracha en el baño. La experiencia entera fue totalmente pésima.
