A biome is a formation of plants and animals that have common characteristics due to similar climates and can be found over a range of continents. Biomes are distinct from habitats, because any biome can comprise a variety of habitats.A biome contrasts with a microbiome. A microbiome is also a mix of organisms that coexist in a defined space, but on a much smaller scale. For example, the human microbiome is the collection of bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms that are present on a human.

Terrestrial Biomes
Q:What is a terrestrial biome?A: Each biome has a unique set of flora and fauna that adapt and interact naturally to obtain natural resources and survive in the environment. Plants in the desert have adapted to the lack of water and extreme aridity by storing water in their stems and by shedding their leaves or becoming dormant during dry seasons. Savannahs or tropical grasslands, which are prone to wildfires, are home to animals with long and strong legs that enable them to outrun the fire. Most trees in temperate deciduous rainforests lose their leaves to preserve water during winter, while a wide range of animals and plants thrive in tropical rainforests. Taiga or coniferous forest is home to drought-tolerant, evergreen and needle-shaped trees. The thin, cone-shaped branches of the trees help shed snow during the region's long winter to prevent being broken. Grasses, small woody shrubs, lichens and mosses are the only plant species that can be found on tundra, the coldest region in the world.

Terrestrial Biomes
The types of land ecosystems with similar climates and organisms
are called terrestrial biomes. Ecosystems are separated into biomes
because different types of organisms are adapted to different
environments. The same biome can be found in different places all over
the world. The tundra biome can be found in North America, Europe, and
Asia.
Factors like temperature, precipitation, and amount of
sunlight help to determine what type of biome an ecosystem is. An area
that has almost no rain, warm daytime temperatures, cacti, and cool night time
temperatures is classified as desert. Desert is an example of a
terrestrial biome.
