Why is MONOGAMY assumed to be the 'preferred' marriage pattern in New Zealand? Monogamy refers to 'sexually exclusive' marriages (one SPOUSE at a time). It is preferred as it is culturally ideal and is prescribed by LAW and promoted through RELIGIOUS TEACHINGS.
What do the FUNCTIONALIST THEORY say about FAMILY? Functionalists: See families as groups that meet the needs of society by -reproducing new members -regulates sexual activity and procreation -teach people the norms and values of society -are organised around a harmony of interests -are weakened when society breaks down
What does the CONFLICT THEORY say about FAMILIES? Conflict Theory: -REINFORCE and support 'power relations' in society -reinforce values that cooperate with needs of dominant institutions. -are sites for conflict due to diverse interests of different family members -change as economy changes
What does the FEMINIST THEORY say about FAMILIES? Feminist Theory: -are GENDERED INSTITUTIONS and reflect 'gender stratification' -are a primary AGENT of gender socialization -involve a power imbalance between male and female

Social Interaction Theory: -emerge as people interact to meet basic needs => develop meaningful relationships -are where people learn social identities through interaction with others -are places where people negotiate roles with each other -change as people develop new understanding of life
What factors most influence a children's adjustment to DIVORCE? Factors that precede the divorce are the most influential to a child's adjustment. In terms of Poor Adjustment, it would be MARITAL VIOLENCE and PROLONGED DISCORD. If the couple remains friendly, emotional strain on the child is reduced. Even more so if both parents remain active in the upbringing of the children. The resources available for the mother specifically also influence a child's adjustment as it dictates her effectiveness as a parent post-divorce.
Define RELIGION sociologically listing the MAJOR ELEMENTS of all religions. (e.g. religion is institutionalised) -Religion is institutionalised -Religion is a FEATURE of 'groups' -Religions are based on 'beliefs' that are considered 'sacred' -Religion establishes values and moral proscriptions for behaviour -Religion establishes norms for behaviour -Religion provides answers to questions of ultimate meaning.
How is RELIGION affected by 'social change'? How is religion a force PROMOTING social change? Affected by: Public generally supports the ordination of women. Some religions refuse to ordain women as clergy but now a large portion of divinity students are women. Religion is also becoming more 'commercialised' as there is a decrease of religious importance for people. Religious products are bought - e.g. music, publications Promoting social change: Religion plays a strong role in social justice, civil rights, liberation movements.
