>1837 &1846. >First attemps securing trading relations,beaten off japanese ships despite USA sending gun boat diplomacy (two warships). 8 July 1853 >Commoder Perry arrived. >Arraived with 4 war ships. >Repeat request for commercial agreements . >& promising to return (with more warships.
>After Perry went to Japan USA recived Japan's response . >1839-42 Opium war (Japan's leaders [the emperor an his court] Tokugawa shogunate were aware of China humiliation). >1854 Treaty of Kanagawa in March. >It opened 2 ports for US trade. >US most favoured nation . >Lasted 200 years .
>After this Japan emerged as a important regional an international power. >1858 Japan signed the treaty of Amity and commerce with US. >Then opposed by imperial court. >dominated by nationalism. >"repeling the barbarians". >Then signed treaties with other Western nations.
Meiji Restoration (1868) >Because the treaties , it had to be signed by the emperor's consent >Thinkers as: -Aisawa Seishisai -Sakuma Zozan >Favoured learning from western science and technology >Important for them the traditional moral values.
>Early leader:Yoshida Shoin(member of Choshu caln). >Wanted the old feudal system. >Greater nation unity. >Incapable of serving the emperor or expeling the "barbarians". >Execution 1859. >Nationalist resentment at the western. >Western interference and control continued growing. >Chosu clan were able to persuede the emperor and be anti Western policy
>Chosu modernized their armies. >& Led political moves >Fight 1860's >Satsuma clan supportes Chosu against the government >1866 emperor died . >Meiji replaced him (his age was 15 years!!) >Civil war persuaded the shogun in 1867. >restore political authority and avoid a national crisis
>Satsuma-Chosu- clan Victorious. >January 1868 established a imperial court. >Named "Tokyo". >1868 system continued without interruptions >Prevent Japan from suffering the fate of several others. >Japan prosperes. >Strong military forces and became influential in 1920's & 1930's.
