What is an emperor The emperor is also known as the 'Son of Heaven. He was the highest person in ancient China. He had a luxury life living in a grand palace lavish food and entertainment. His word was considered law.
Who are Scholars Scholars were men who studied the teachings of Confucius and other philosophers.
Who were Nobles Nobles were people from wealthy families. They owned lots of land. Nobles work for the emperor of China and they are related to him but they are not slaves.
Who are Priests Priests were people who were authorized to perform the sacred rituals of religion and other ceremonies
Who are peasants This group made up about 80% of the population, making China an agricultural society. Whilst often poor, they were valued in society because they produced everyone's food. Their crops often included rice and wheat
Who were workers and tradesmen Workers and tradesmen were respected in China because of their contribution of skills to society. They make furniture, clothing, houses or valuables such as porcelain.
Who are merchants, soldiers and slaves These people were the least respected in ancient Chinese society. Businessmen were seen as shameful because they made money from the work of others. Soldiers were not respected because they killed for a living. People usually became slaves after they were captured in war
How were women treated in ancient China Women didn't have any purpose in China because they supposedly couldn't do the same things as men. They were treated like slaves and never paid to do anything. They also didn't have proper names
What are Slaves Slaves are people who work for families and do whatever they are told and they do all of the housework. Slaves could not marry and if they were living in the country, they would have to sleep in the paddocks.
