The Canton System and Cohongs | Foreigners couldn’t go into China unless they had permissions from the Emperor Cohongs were business associations- they had to have a permit from the Emperor in order to run their businesses, they mostly sold teas and would trade tea. They could deal and sell to foreigners while other businesses without permission could not. Cohongs set the price of tea and were the only ones allowed to trade in tea They had expansive economic power |
What was the British Influence on China? | Britain knew how effective the Cohong system was. Britain was also in debt, yet they still spent a lot of money on tea. In order to pay for tea, British aristocrats developed opium and sold it to Chinese drug traders. They would funnel the money they made from Opium into the East India Tea Company |
