What is Marxism? -society is base on conflict between the capitalist class (proletariat) and working class (Bourgeoise) - See all society's institutions as helping maintain class inequality and capitalism -functions of family are purely for the benefit of the capitalist system
Marxist contributions (part 1) -family preforms 3 functions for capitalism: >inheritance of property: according to Engels, as capitalism developed, so did the ownership of property and increased wealth and therefore the patriarchal monogamous nuclear family emerged as men had to be certain of their child's paternity to ensure their legitimate heirs inherited from them
Marxist contributions (part 2) >ideological functions: the family socialises children in the idea and hierarchy and inequality are inevitable, and according to Eli Zaretsky (1976) we also have false belief that the family is a 'haven' from the exploitative world of work
Marxist contributions (part 3) >family as a unit of consumption: family is an important market of the sale of consumer goods, therefore generating profits for capitalists; advertisers urge family's to 'keep up with the joneses', the media targets children who use 'pester power' to persuade parents to spend more
Criticisms of Marxism - tends to assume the nuclear family is dominant in capitalist society -feminists argue that the Marxist emphasis on class and capitalism underestimates the importance of gender inequality in the family - functionalists argue it ignores the benefits of family life
