Pregunta Respuesta
What type of wave is shown below? Transverse Wave
Name all the characteristics of the wave shown below.
What type of wave is a sound wave? Longitudinal
Draw a longitudinal (compression) wave and label a wavelength, compression and rarefaction.
In longitudinal waves, the vibrations move in a direction ___________ to the direction in which the wave travels. In longitudinal waves, the vibrations move in a direction parallel to the direction in which the wave travels.
In transverse waves, the vibrations move in a direction _____________ to the direction in which the wave travels. In transverse waves, the vibrations move in a direction perpendicular to the direction in which the wave travels.
The greater the ____________ of the sound wave, the greater the energy carried by the wave. Therefore, the ____________ the sound is. The greater the amplitude of the sound wave, the greater the energy carried by the wave. Therefore, the louder the sound is.
Why does sound move better through a solid? Because the particles in a solid are tightly packed together, sound waves can quickly transfer energy from particle to particle in a solid.
____________ is how high or low a sound is. Pitch is how high or low a sound is.
The ___________ the wavelength, the ________ the frequency. The longer the wavelength, the lower the frequency. The shorter the wavelength, the higher the frequency.
Which of the two longitudinal waves has the higher frequency? How do you know? Wave A has a higher frequency. The shorter the wavelength, the higher the frequency.
Why does sound move slower in gases? Gas particles are farther apart, so the speed of sound is slowest when it moves through gases.
Does wave C or D have the lowest pitch? How do you know? Wave D has a lower pitch than wave C because wave D has a longer wavelength.
Which wave is the loudest, A or B? How do you know? Wave A is louder because it has a higher amplitude.
Do sound waves travel through space? Why or Why not? In order for sound to travel, there has to be something with molecules (matter) for it to travel through. In space, the large empty areas between stars and planets, there are no molecules to vibrate. There is no sound there.
Which air temperature hot or cold would sound move faster (assume the distance between molecules is the same)? Why? Since the molecules vibrate faster in hot air, sound waves can travel more quickly.
