Pregunta Respuesta
Identify the type of elements that make up ionic compounds? Ionic compounds are made from metal and non metal ions
What can be said about the boiling points of ionic compounds? Ionic compounds have HIGH melting and boiling points because a lot of heat energy is needed to break the ionic bonds.
Name the structure This is a giant ionic lattice.
Why do ionic compounds form lattice structures? The positive ions (cations) align themselves next to the negative (anions) to form a lattice structure.
Why are ionic structures brittle? When hit, the layers move over each other. This means that positively charged ions lie above positively charged ions. These repel each other.
Do ionic compounds conduct electricity when solid? NO! there are no free charges to allow the conduction of electricity
Do ionic compounds conduct electricity when molten (liquid)? YES! There are free charges that allow the conduction of electricity.
Do ionic compounds conduct electricity when aqueous (liquid)? YES! There are free charges that allow the conduction of electricity.
