Deception Participants should not be lied to, deceived or withheld information. Situation where deception is needed- drug testing: when testing the effects of certain drugs, participants can be given a placebo or a real drug to compare effects.
Informed Consent Participants should have fully informed consent. This means that they have agreed to take part in the experiment and understand the full extent of their participation. Usually written consent is obtained. Social experiments such as bystander behaviour may have problems with obtaining informed consent.
Confidentiality All information about participants should be kept confidential. Information about personal data and any performance in experiments must be kept safe by the experimenter.
Right To Withdraw Participants must be informed that they can withdraw their data from the experiment at any time they wish. This is their right.
Debriefing After taking part in an experiment participants must be told exactly what the experiment was about.
No Psychological or Physical Harm Participants should not be mentally or physically harmed. This can include being made to feel stupid etc.
