Convection in Liquid | As water above a flame becomes warmer, it expands to become less dense. It then rises as the cooler, denser air pushes it out of the way (displaces it). |
Convection in Air | When air is heated by the sun, the warm air that rises above the equator is pushed out (displaced) to the top, allowing cooler and denser air to sink to the bottom. |
Examples of Convection (1) | [Refrigerator] The cool air sinks below the freezer compartment (which is at the top of the fridge). This will set up a circulating current of air which cools all the food inside the refrigerator. |
Example of Convection (2) | [Room Heater] The warm air produced by a heater gets carried all over the room it is in (in a cycle). The cool air stays at the bottom where your feet are. |
