TImeline 1862 - Born in France 1872 - Enrolled in Paris Conservatory for piano study 1880 - Pianist and tutor in the house of Madam Von Meck. Took composition lessons 1889 - Visited the worlds fair in Paris 1899 - Composed his only String Quartet 1909 - Diagnosed with Cancer 1918 - Died in Paris.
Additional Notes - Influenced by Wagner early on but rejected him later seeking a new Aesthetic - Influenced by Javanese and Balinese music. Began to incorporate. whole tone and pentatonic scales. - His music was often linked with poetry of Mallarne and paintings of Monet and "impressionism" though he disliked the term. - His music uses parallel structure, a reduction in beat pulse, non - funtional harmony. "Color" is an important facet of his music. His style profoundly influenced the 20th century.
