Conversion The unconscious transformation of mental conflict into physical symptoms w/ no organic cause.
Denial Escaping unpleasant thoughts, events, facts, feelings, wishes, or needs by simply ignoring their existence.
Displacement The transference of emotions associated w/ a particular person, object, or situation to a less threatening person, object, or situation.
Identification Consciously or unconsciously attributing to oneself the characteristics of another person or group who is admired.
Intellectualization The process in which events are analyzed based on remote, cold facts, and without emotion, rather than incorporating feelings into the processing.
Projection The unconscious rejection of emotionally unacceptable or unwanted thoughts, behaviors, and feelings by projecting or attributing them to someone else.
Rationalization Subconscious justifications or excuses given to make unreasonable or illogical ideas, behaviors, or feelings seem logical and acceptable.
Reaction Formation Unconsciously dealing with unacceptable feelings and behaviors by developing and demonstrating the opposite behavior or emotion.
Regression Reverting to an earlier, more primitive, and childlike pattern of behavior that may or may not have been previously exhibited.
Undoing A person tries to undo an unhealthy, destructive or otherwise threatening thought or action by engaging in contrary behavior.
Repression Painful, frightening, or threatening emotions, memories, impulses, or drives are subconsciously pushed or "stuffed" into the unconscious.
Sublimation UNCONSCIOUS redirection of undesirable, immature, destructive impulses into socially acceptable activities. Ex: angry, play football
Suppression CONSCIOUS denial of painful, frightening, or threatening emotions, memories, impulses, or drives.
