First period of his creative life	1900 - 1917 "Primitivism" or "Russian" period. Complex meter, Russian folk songs, Polytonal, polymetered, large orchestra. Three ballets, Firebird, Petrushka, Rite of Spring, Renard, The Wedding
Second period	1917 - 1951 "Neo-Classicism". Smaller orchestra, barrowed from jazz, replaced folk music with classical resources. Classical forms and genres used with a restraint of emotion. The soldier's tale, Symphony of Psalms, Symphony in 3 movements, Oedipus Rex, The Rake's Progress.
Third Period	1952 - 1971 "Serialism". This occured with the death of his rival, Schoenberg but more an outgrowth of Webern's style. Piece became much shorter with more strict imitative counterpoint. Memoriam Dylan Thomas, The Flood (for television), Requiem Cantacles.
Stravinsky/Schoenberg Rivalry	When Stravinsky turned to Noe-Classicism Schoenberg launched an all out attack on Stravinsky's music. The musical world was split into two factions - Tonal vs atonal or Stravinsky vs. Schoenberg.
