Define health. A state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
Define physical well being. All the body systems are working well together and have no illness or injury.
Define mental well being. You feel good about yourself, your emotions are under control, and you do not feel stressed.
Define social well being. You have all the basic necessities of life; family, friends, food, a home, and a role in society.
How does exercise benefit your physical well being? Improves body shape, strength, stamina, flexibility and posture, as well as helping to keep body weight down, toning the body, and boosting immunity.
How does exercise benefit your mental well being? Relieves stress and tension, and (because your body shape will improve) higher self esteem. It helps you sleep better, gives you something to aim for, and improves self confidence.
How does exercise benefit your social well being? Helps you meet new people and make friends. Improves your teamwork and cooperation skills.
Define fitness. Good health or good condition, especially as the result of exercise and proper nutrition.
Define exercise. Activity that requires physical or mental exertion, especially when performed to develop or maintain fitness. It is the key factor which links health and fitness. (People who exercise regularly tend to be healthier and fitter).
What are the 4 main components of fitness? Suppleness, Strength, Stamina, Speed (Four S's)
Name some good exercise habits in everyday life. Walking or cycling rather than driving, get off bus earlier to walk, use stairs (not lift/elevator), if involved in sedentary work, try to involve exercise during breaks, join clubs.
What are the 3 types of strength? Static, explosive and dynamic.
Define static strength. This is the greatest amount of strength that can be applied to an immovable object (e.g. Rugby - pushing against others in a scrum).
Define explosive strength. This is the strength used in one short, sharp burst of movement.
Define dynamic strength. This is the strength a sportsperson needs to support their own body weight over a prolonged period of time, or to be able to apply force against some type of object.
Define a balanced diet. A diet which contains all the nutrients you need and in the correct amount.
Name the 7 different nutrients needed in a diet. Water, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, fibre.
