What is digestion? Digestion is the breakdown of insoluble molecules into soluble ones
What happens at the mouth? At the mouth, the food is broken down mechanically by the teeth. Saliva is added which contains amylase to break down starch
What is the oesophagus? The food pipe that leads to the stomach. The food is moved down by peristalsis (muscle contraction)
What are the 2 jobs of the stomach acid? 1. To kill bacteria 2. To activate the enzymes
What happens at the small intestine? Digestive enzymes are released into the food which break down the food groups which are then absorbed into the blood stream
What happens at the Large intestine? Absorption of water
What is the role of the liver? To produce bile
What is the role of bile? 1. To neutralize the stomach acid 2. To emulsify fats
What is the role of the pancreas? To produce the digestive enzymes
What is the adaptation of the small intestine that makes it good at it's job? The small intestine has lots of villi which gives it a bigger surface area for maximum absorption of food
