Define tidal volume The volume of air moved in and out of the lungs with each breath
Define vital capacity The largest possible volume of air that can be moved in and out of the lungs in a single breath
Define inspiratory reserve volume The volume of air breathed in over and above tidal volume
Define expiratory reserve volume The volume of air that can be breathed out over and above tidal volume
Define residual volume The volume of air that remains in the lungs after maximal exhalation
Define dead space The air in the bronchioles, bronchi and trachea. There is no gaseous echange between the air and blood here

Define ventalation rate Total volume of air breathed in or out in one minute
