Pregunta Respuesta
Electromagnetic Spectrum The full range of wavelengths of all electromagnetic waves: radio waves, microwaves, infra-red, visible light, ultraviolet, X-ray, Gamma rays. They are transverse waves made up of oscillating electric and magnetic fields that travel at the speed of light in a vacuum. (My way of remembering the order is: Riots Might Involve Violent Uprisings, with formation X-ray-Gamma)
The Normal The line which is perpendicular to the reflecting surface at the point where the ray hits it
Angles are measured from the _________ Normal
Law of Reflection The angle of incidence is equal to the angle of reflection and the incident ray, reflected ray and normal lie on the same plane
Images only occur on _______________ Flat Surfaces
The focus of a Curved Mirror Where all the rays from a converging (concave) mirror are concentrated, or where they appear to originate after passing through a diverging (convex) mirror
Refraction Refraction is the bending of light, when it his the interface between the 2 media obliquely, as it passes from one medium or depth to another
Refraction is caused by: The change of speed of the waves in the different medium. Refraction towards the normal indicates that the light is slowing down, whilst refraction away from the normal indicates that the light is speeding up
Refractive Index The ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum to the speed of light in the medium
Snell's Law Angle of incidence is directly proportional to the sine of the angle of refraction for a particular pair of media
Total Internal Reflection The critical angle where total internal reflection prevents the ray from escaping from a higher optical-density medium to a lower optical-density medium. (The angle of refraction that corresponds to the critical angle is 90 degrees)
Total internal reflection can be used to: Transmit signals down optical fibres
