SPECTRUM the anti-infective activity of a drug is defined by their spectrum. i.e. the set of pathogens that are affected by the antibiotic
BACTERICIDES VS BACTERIOSTATIC bactericides: destruct bacteria bacteriostatic: inhibit bacterial reproduction, without eradicating the bacteria
WHAT IS A COMMON PROPERTY TO ALL ANTIBIOTICS? selective toxicity
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF ANTIBIOTIC TREATMENTS? 1.empirical: treatment done without knowing the specific germ causing the infection. 2.specific: treatment chosen after IDing the germ and knowing the antibiogram.
HOW IS ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY ACCESSED? by testing the susceptibility of the microorganism in contact with the antibiotic, using an ANTIBIOGRAM. it is based on diffusion & dilution techniques.
MIC minimum inhibitory concentration
MBC minimum bactericidal concentration
MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) lowest concentration of antibiotic that is capable of inhibiting the growth of 5 to 10 bacteria in 1 ml of growth medium after 18- 24h of incubation.
MBC(minimum bactericidal concentration) is the lowest concentration that can destroy or kill 5 to 10 bacteria in 1 ml of growth medium after 18-24 h of incubation.
HOW IS MIC USED IN PHARMACOLOGY? MIC is the parameter that classifies a germ sensitivity to an antibiotic in the antibiogram. Bacterial strains can be sensitive or resistant.
WHAT CONCENTRATION DOES A THERAPEUTIC ANTI-INFECTIVE NEED TO ACHIEVE? it needs to achieve an antibiotic tissue concentration which exceeds the MIC.
