this time a fear every time he goes to his job. he is always vulnerable. Stress of the job generates sympathy
"home is a place" and "never get back to" the fear at the heart of the cop - that he may be killed and not come back to home - his sense of self - that one day he will be changed so much by his job
would be who have to be unusual word order/ syntax means reader had to pause and reflect on his meaning
his victims ambiguous/ rhetorical question. innocent lives may be sacrificed for the policeman to do his job - but is this right? can create sympathy for those who come into contact with the cop
