Computer Aided Design (CAD)	The use of computer systems in engineering, architecture, kitchen design etc. to support the design of products, buildings or the placement of objects (kitchen units, bathroom furniture etc.)
Zoom	Allows the architect to see the design in fine detail.
Rotation	Allows the architect to see the design from all angles.
Walkthrough	Allows the architect to see in virtual reality what the inside of the building will look like (Must be clearly referring to the internal view.)
Stress/Strain	Allows the architect to see if there are any load bearing problems with the design before it is built. / Do calculations to see if the building is safe. / Allows the architect to see if the design of the building is safe before it is built.
Hatching/Rendering	Allows the architect to try out different finishes on the building to see the aesthetic affect / chose the best.
Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM)	The use of computers to control the manufacturing process in some way by controlling manufacturing equipment such as lathes, drills, millers and robots.
Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT)	EFT is moving money (electronically) from one account to another e.g. From a customer account to pay for goods purchased.
Electronic Point Of Sale (EPOS)	Is the hardware and software needed to automate the checkout process.
Bar Code Recognition	Using a series of light and dark bars of differing widths to enter a code which is usually printed underneath the barcode.
Just In Time Stock Control Systems	Control systems used for stock control in supermarkets.
Loyalty Cards	A card used to attract / retain customers and encourage customers to shop regularly at the store.
Computer Assisted Learning (CAL)	CAL covers a whole range of computer based packages which aim to provide interactive instruction in a particular area or on a certain topic.
Computer Based Training (CBT)	CBT uses ICT systems for training in the workplace, usually by making uses of PCs or portable devices. It is about using computers to train people to do different tasks and also train them how to react in different situations.
Distance Learning	Is learning which takes place away from the confines of a traditional teacher/lecturer in a room teaching a group of students. Instead the learning takes place at a different place to the teacher.
Videoconferencing	Enables 2 or more individuals in different locations to see and talk to each other and exchange audio, video or any other digital file, enabling the users to share computer applications and even work concurrently on the same file.
E Learning	Learning that takes place online – this can be in the form of a multimedia product used to teach a particular subject.
Revision Programmes	Software that helps you revise for your exams. Revision programs can come on CD or be used direct from a website.
Authoring Software	Authoring is the process of creating a multimedia product such as a website, an interactive presentation, an interactive learning tool for CAL/CBT or instructional software for an electronic whiteboard.
Interactive Whiteboards	Is a large interactive display which makes use of a computer and a projector – used to allow lessons or lectures to be more engaging and exciting.
Optimal Mark Recognition (OMR)	Teachers are given an OMR form with class lists each week and they put a black mark whether present or absent. The form is read by a computer and an absent list is produced. The teacher marks the reason for absence in the correct space on the OMR form.
Smart Cards	Each pupil has their own smart card/swipe card which they swipe through a computer at the beginning of registration and every lesson. The data is sent to the office either by wireless or file transfer.
Biometrics	Uses a unique feature of the human body such as fingerprints or pattern on the retinal of the eye.
Sensors	Sensors are devices that can be used to detect physical, chemical and biological signals. Used in ITU units to measure temperature, blood pressure, central venous pressure etc.
MRI	Provide a tremendous level of detail on tissue information – very good for detecting brain tumours.
CAT	Produces a complete 3D model of a patients bones and internal organs.
Blood Barcoding	Allows the tracking of blood from its donation to its use.
Intranet	Private internal network which allows employees of an organisation to access information resources within the organisation.
Extranet	Are intranets opened to selected groups of users outside the company such as customers, suppliers, etc.
Distributed Medical Database	Where the data is stored on a number of servers rather than just one. These servers are often in different locations. The user will not know data is being obtained from different servers.
Expert System	An expert system is a computer system which emulates the decision making ability of a human expert.
Knowledge Base	A huge organised set of knowledge about a particular subject. It contains facts and also judgemental knowledge, which gives it the ability to make a good guess, like a human expert.
Inference Engine	A set of rules on which to base decisions and most of these rules have the ‘if then’ structure. It is part of the expert system that does the reasoning by manipulating and using the knowledge in the knowledge base.
A User Interface	Presents questions and information to the operator and also receives answers from the operator.
MP3 Player	Extension: Listen to 1000s of tracks on a small portable player. Advantage: Allows you to listen to your favourite music wherever you are.
Music Downloads	Extension: Allows you to select only the tracks you want. Advantage: Saves money – user can buy singles instead of whole albums.
Digital Photography	Extension: Take many but only keep / print out the ones you want Advantage: Only save the ones you want so saves memory.
Interactive TV	Extension: Larger choice of channels and services such as teleshopping, book holidays etc. Advantage: On demand / streaming films anytime / Parental controls.
Games	Extension: Buy a disc or online gaming sites some of which are free but others you have to pay a subscription. The speed of processing power in the form of graphics cards and sound cards are required to enhance gaming performance. Advantage: Play people all around the world
Social Networking	Extension: Free site / have to create accounts and email / have to accept advertising Advantage: Keep in touch / cheap way to advertise own services and companies
Internet	Extension: Online booking/ shopping OR online betting / gambling OR online dating Advantages: 24/7 OR Easier for disabled OR Long distance chat.
Music Composition	Extension: Using instruments such as electronic keyboards with midi interfaces – software allows multi track sequences. Advantage: Allows experimentation.
