What does GUI stand for? Graphical User Interface
What is a GUI? A visual way of interacting with a computer using items such as windows, icons, and menus, used by most modern operating systems; a desktop is an example of a GUI. Microsoft Windows is an example of GUI.
What does DTE stand for? Desktop Environment
What is a DTE? A DTE can be customised by changing icon sizes, adjusting window sizes, mouse settings, speed of mouse, etc. Using your settings window, you can change the appearance of the desktop e.g. windows, positions of objects, graphics, and screen resolution, etc.
What are files and folders? Saved data is usually referred to as a file. A file may contain text, numbers, an image, a video or sound. A folder is a way of organizing your files. Files can be moved from one folder to another. Files and folders can be deleted, copied of renamed.

What are print settings? A menu of options is often offered when something is printed. Options may include: pages to print - all pages or selected or current page; number of copies; which printer to use.
What is a password? If you are leaving your computer logged in for any reason, it is important to make sure that your work is secure and that no one other than you can access your work area; this is why you will need a password to lock and log into your account.
What does IWB stand for? Interactive Whiteboard
What is an IWB? A large white screen which uses a special pen like a mouse pointer. It helps make learning interactive and more fun.
What does CAL stand for? Computer Assisted Learning
What is CAL? A way to learn new skills using a computer or interactive software on a DVD/CD by using the internet. Using CAL can be more enjoyable.
What does a VLE stand for? A Virtual Learning Environment
What is a VLE? A software system that uses the internet to support teaching and learning. It provides a set of tools that allows teachers to set up learning material. Feedback can be given to teach particular topics; pupils can work at own pace and pupils can pose questions related to certain tasks set.
What is the internet in terms of as a learning resource? The internet can help with research and discussion groups can be formed on the internet through forums. Email can provide contact with pupils in other schools.
What can application software be used for? - DTP software can help pupil's present their work. E.g. leaflets and brochures. - Spreadsheets can be used to create charts and organise numerical data. - Databases can be used to store, search and sort data and produce reports.
What is distance learning? It means studying for a qualification from home, using online learning, web pages and links, then taking the exam online.
What are the advantages of distance learning? - You can learn anytime, anywhere. - Learning can be done at own pace. - There are often online chat rooms and discussion forums where you can discuss ideas/problems. - Wide range of learning courses available.
What are the disadvantages of distance learning? - There's no tutor to discuss problems with - Students may feel isolated. - There may be a lack of motivation if a student can choose the frequency and times when learning takes place.
What is an online tutorial? The internet provides many online tutorials e.g. BBC bitesize. They may be interactive and animated which allows pupils to see what happens in a different situation.
What are the advantages of online tutorials? - They are readily available - No teacher is required - Questions can be answered quickly - There are on screen demonstrations.
What are the disadvantages of online tutorials - There is no teacher to ask questions. - You can't skip bits you already know. - May proceed at a steady speed that doesn't suit you.
What is an online assessment? Associated with online and distance learning, exams can be taken online. Questions are displayed on screen, you answer via mouse and keyboard. Marks may be immediately available.
What are the advantages of online assessments. - Tests can be taken at anytime. - Reduces the wastage of paper. - Results can be instant or received very quickly. - Records of marks and then statistics based on assessments can be produced.
What are the disadvantages of online assessments? - Tests are impersonal to the students - It's expensive and difficult to set questions. - It's difficult to mark subjective answers e.g. essays. - It requires organisation and computer space for a large group.
What are the advantages of a VLE? - Learning takes place at anytime. - A teacher doesn't need to be present. - There are graphics, text, audio and other visual stimuli to aid learning.
What are the disadvantages of a VLE? - It may take longer for answers to arrive e.g. someone may have to post it. - Some of the material may become out of date. - Training is needed to set up a VLE - If there is a failure of equipment, students will not have a lesson.
How can ICT be used to support those with disabilities? Software has been developed for: - People with learning difficulties to improve reading or writing skills. - Helping with basic mathematical skills - Those who may have a visual impairment, this allows them to access a computer. - Those who cannot type - predictive text
How can a desktop environment help those with disabilities? They can be customised for those with visual impairments.
How can braille keyboards help those with disabilities? Braille keyboards are input devices for those who cannot see the keyboard, though most people can be trained to become trained typists. A braille keyboard has raised dots for the character on key.
How can voice recognition software help those with disabilities? People who have difficulty typing can use a microphone as an input device to issue commands to the computer or to use an application available. - Specialist software - converts users voice to words - Predictive software - offers choices of words or phrases that can be selected to increase the speed of input.
How can text-to-voice software be used to aid those with disabilities? - Device works by users touching them. - Position where device is touched is sensed and used as data. - A menu is then displayed - Users select the option by touching them.
What do concept keyboards do? Concept keyboards are touch sensitive boards that have special overlays that help a handicapped person to input data. Can also be used for young people with learning disabilities.
What are the other uses of touch screens? - Museums, exhibits, etc. - Banks, customer services offered. - Doctors surgery, patient to register attendance. - Restaurants or bars, staff use touch screens to select items, meals, etc.
