Frederick the Great of Prussia He invited Voltaire to his court and sought his advice on how to be an Enlightened ruler. Frederick allowed freedom of the press and and gave catholics and jews permission to settle in Prussia.
Peter the Great of Russia Contemporary of Louis XIV. He was responsible for trying to make Russia a part of Europe. He introduced his country to western ideas of science, education, military training & industry.
Catherine the Great of Russia She read works of Montesquieu and Voltaire and imported Western culture to Russia. Also revised & codified Russian Law, patronized the arts, created hospitals, etc.
Maria Theresa of Austria After getting the throne she realized that Austria was weak, so she began a seires of reforms; limited the church, revised the tax syst., reduced the power of the lord, & also improved the educational syst.
Joseph II of Autria Furthered his mom´s reforms (M.Theresa). He put an end to serfdom and capital punishment. Religious tolerance to Calvinists, Lutherans and Jews. Established Hospt.
