Macbeth Quotes | William Shakespeare |
"O valiant cousin, Worthy gentleman!" | King Duncan acknowledges Macbeth's good deeds and now calls him "cousin". This shows how respectful the King is towards Macbeth after his heroism |
"If it were done, when 'tis done, then t'were well / It were done quickly" | Macbeth is contemplating killing the king. He understands that it is a terrible action to perform and that if he goes through with it, he will have to do it swiftly and secretly, as not to attract attention to himself |
"We will proceed no further in this business" | Macbeth understands that he should not be killing the king, as he has given him much honour. He therefore states that he will not be killing the king |
"MACBETH: This is a sorry sight [looks onto his hands] LADY MACBETH: A foolish thought to say a sorry sight. | After the murder in Act 2, Macbeth is already regretting his actions. Lady Macbeth sees that he is regretting this and begins to mock him by calling him a fool. |
"O, full of scorpions in my mind, dear wife! / Thou know'st that Banquo and his Fleance lives!" | At this point in the play, it is seen that Macbeth's paranoia has began to grow. He thinks that Banquo and Fleance, know of his actions in killing the king. He then has them murdered by 3 murderers later in Act 3. |
"Hence, horrible shadow / Unreal mock'ry hence!" | Act 3 Scene 4 is seen as the Turning Point in Macbeth as it shows Macbeth's conscience and ambition begin to get to him. After the murder of Banquo, Macbeth believes he sees the ghost of Banquo at a banquet. No one else can see the ghost so Macbeth is seen as being insane. |
