Pregunta Respuesta
what is quantitative data? numerical data that can be counted. represents how much, how many, how long etc.
how is quantitative data presented? in tables or granphs
what is qualitative data? express the quality of something. includes descriptions, words, meanings etc.
what can be done with this data? put into quantitative data by placing it in categories
what are the three measures of central tendency? mean median and mode
what are two measures of dispersion? range and standard deviation
what does range show? the difference between the highest and lowest value in a data set
what does standard deviation show? amount of variation in the data set and assesses the data around the mean
what is a strength of quantitative data? its easier to analyse than qualitative data
why? numerical data can be summarised using graphs and measures of central tendency and dispersion
what does this make easier? drawing conclusions
what is a limitation of quantitative data? tends to oversimplify reality and human experience
how does it suggest this? it suggests there are simple descriptions of human behaviours that can be expressed by numbers
what is a strength of qualitative data? it can represent true complexities of human behaviour
how does it do this? it illustrates peoples thought and feelings that cant be done using numbers
what is a problem with using qualitative data? summarising this data can be effected by personal beliefs and expectations
what is a strength of using the mean? it makes use of all the values in the final analysis
what is a limitation of using the mean? it can be mis-representative if the data has extreme values
what is a strength of the median? it isn't affected by extreme scores
what is a limitation of the median? not always as 'sensitive' as the mean because not all values are reflected
what is one strength of the mode? useful when data is in categories
what is a limitation of the mode? it isn't a useful way of describing data when there are several modes
what is a strength of the range? its easy to calculate
what is a limitation of the range? its effected by extreme values
what is a strength of s.d.? a more precise measure of dispersion as all values are used in calculation
what is a limitation of s.d.? it may hide some characteristics of data e.g. extreme values
