What is an atom? The smallest particle of any element
What is a molecule? A particle made of two or more atoms joined together
What is an Element? a material that contains only one type of atom
What is a compound? a material that contains two or more different elements joined together
What is a mixture? a material that contains two or more chemicals NOT joined
What does the number of protons equal? The number of electrons
How do you work out the electron configuration of an atom? 1. Work out the number of protons, neutrons and electrons (protons = electrons) 2. Draw first shell of atom - only 2 electrons can fit on first shell 3. Draw extra shells until all electrons are on a shell - extra shells can fit a maximum of 8 electrons 4. Count the number of electrons on each shell e.g. 2.8.1 = 11 electrons
Define the term 'Isotope' Isotopes are different atomic forms of the same element, which have the same number of protons but different number of neutrons.
What does the Atomic number tell you? The number of protons in the atom
What does the Mass number tell you? The total number of protons and neutrons in the atom
What does the relative atomic mass tell you? The average mass of the atom, taking account the mass of isotopes
What does an atom look like? It has protons and neutrons in its nucleus and electrons surrounding the nucleus on shells.
What is meant by the term 'empirical formula'? The empirical formula is the simplest ratio of different atoms in a substance

How do you work out the Relative atomic mass? 1.Multiply the mass of each isotope by it's relative abundance 2. Add them together 3.Divide by the sum of the relative abundances

What is Ionic bonding? Atoms transfer (lose or gain) electrons to form positively or negatively charged atoms called ions.
