What drug class is allopurinol, and what is it used to treat? | Xanthine-oxidase inhibitor - prevents breakdown of purines which produce uric acid. Used to treat gout |
What are the side effects of allopurinol? | GI upset - diarrhoea |
What should you beware of when prescribing azathioprine and allopurinol together? | Azathioprine is metabolised into mercaptopurine and therefore its breakdown is slowed down when co-prescribed with allopurinol. It should therefore be replaced with an alternative agent or the dose of azathioprine reduced to take into account the effects of allopurinol on metabolism. |
When should allopurinol be given? | At least 2 weeks after an acute attack of gout, as it can precipitate acute attacks. |
