What are the properties and uses of cast-iron? Hard outer layer with a soft core, has a high strength under compression, cant be bent or forged. Used in heavy crushing machinery and car brake discs.
What are the properties and uses of mild steel? Tough, has a high ductility and malleability, rusts easily, can't be hardened. Used in nails, screws, car bodies and building frames.
What are the properties and uses of carbon steel? Strong, hard but not ductile, not very tough or malleable. Used in garden tools, springs and screwdrivers.
What are the properties and uses of stainless steel? Hard and tough, very good resistance to rust. Used in sinks, cutlery and dishes.
What are the properties and uses of high speed steel? Very hard, resistant to to friction, can only be sharpened by grinding. Used in Lathe cutting tools, drills, milling cutters.
What are the properties and uses of copper? Malleable, ductile and tough, good heat and electricity conductor, easily joined. Used in plumbing fittings and electrical equipment.
What are the properties and uses of aluminium? Strong for its weight, light, soft, ductile, good conductor of heat and electricity, difficult to join. Used in kitchen foils, cooking pans and window frames.
What are the properties and uses of zinc? Very weak, heavy, resists corrosion, very difficult to work. Used in electro plating and hot dipping ferrous metals, protecting materials from rusting such as roofing.
What are the properties and uses of gold? A precious metal, malleable, ductile, very resistant to corrosion. Used in jewellery, bullion and electrical contacts.
What are the properties and uses of tin? Soft, pliable, silvery-white, not easily oxidised and resists corrosion. Used in can coating, solder and electrical circuits.
What are the properties and uses of silver? Very good conductor of heat and electricity, very ductile, malleable. Used in jewellery, silver ware and coins.
What are the properties and uses of brass? Heavy, quite hard, gold colour, easily machined and joined. Used in castings, garden ornaments and taps.
What are the properties and uses of bronze? Reddish-yellow, harder than brass, resistant to corrosion, casts well. Used in bearings and gears and cast sculptures.
What are the properties and uses of pewter? Malleable, can be hardened, low melting point, bluish tint. Used in glass making, pottery and cutlery.
