What were the attitudes to marriage & the family in the 1950s? • People were expected to only have sex after marriage • People married young, in church, for life • Families were husband & wife & children • Homosexuality was a criminal offence • Women used to get married younger as fewer had careers
How have the attitudes to marriage & the family changed since? • Most people have sex before marriage • Many couples live together (cohabit) rather than marry • The average age for marrying has increased enormously (to 30) • Divorce is accepted as a normal part of life • March 2014 - homosexuals allowed to marry in UK
Why have the attitudes to cohabitation & marriage changed? • Effective contraception now available to everyone in UK - made it safer to have sex before marriage • Media showed sexual relationships outside marriage as normal so more people thought sex outside marriage was ok • Fewer people go to Church & so are not influenced by the Christian message to save sex for marriage
Why have the attitudes to divorce changed? • New laws made divorce easier & cheaper • Increased equality for women means that women are no longer prepared to accept unequal treatment from men & will divorce • Most divorces occur after 10 years which was the average length of marriage 100 years because women often died at child birth
Why have the attitudes to family life changed? • Due to more cohabitation there are more families where parents are not married • Increase in divorce has led to increase in re-marriage & more reconstituted families • More extended families as working parents rely on grandparents for childcare
Why have the attitudes to homosexuality changed? • Medical research has shown homosexuality is normal so more people accept gay couples • The work of gay rights groups has led to an acceptance of equal rights for homosexuals • More gay celebrities - confirming it is normal
What do Christians believe about sex outside marriage? • God gave sex for the procreation of children who should be brought up in a Christian family - sex should only be in marriage • Bible says sex outside marriage is sinful • Adultery is banned by 10 commandments • Adultery breaks the wedding vows, which are a promise to God • Jesus taught that adultery was wrong & we should follow Jesus’ teachings Some Christians would take a relaxed approach & say cohabitation is ok in long-term committed relationships when marriage is intended
What is the Catholic attitude to divorce? Do not allow religious divorce or re-marriage because… • Jesus taught that divorce is wrong - Mark’s gospel • The Catechism teaches that marriage cannot be dissolved - it is a promise to God so religious divorce is impossible • There can be no re-marriage as there can be no religious divorce - re-marriage would be both bigamy & adultery
What are non-Catholic Christian attitudes to divorce? Most non-Catholic churches are against divorce but allow it if a marriage has broken down & allow divorced people to marry because… • Jesus allowed divorce for a partner’s adultery • If the marriage has really broken down it is the lesser of the two evils to separate • They believe it is better to divorce than to live in hatred & argue all the time
What is the Catholic purpose to marriage? Church teaches God created man & woman for each other in sacrament of marriage (it involves God too). Purpose of marriage: • Couples have a life-long relationship of love & faithfulness • Couples have support & comfort for each other • Fruitfulness for the procreation of children • Bringing up a Christian family
How is the purpose of marriage shown in the Wedding Ceremony? • Exchange of vows shows commitment & promise to love & stay faithful to one another • Rings symbolise unending nature of marriage • Priest emphasises that it is a sacrament (in front of God) that cannot be broken • Wedding preparation course teaches couple to support & comfort each other • Prayers give couple God’s grace & strength to support each other • Priest asks if couple will accept children & bring them up as Christians
Why are Catholics against contraception? • Church teaches that all sex should be unitive & creative - contraception isn’t creative • Artificial contraception leads to promiscuity, broken families, divorce & STDs
Why do some non-Catholic Christians allow contraception? •There is nothing in the Bible that forbids the use of contraception • They believe condoms are the best way to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS
Why is family life important to Christians? • One of the main purposes of Christian marriage is to have children & bring them up as good Christians, introducing them to Mass etc. • Christian teaching on divorce shows that family is too important to be broken up • Without family, children would not learn right from wrong • Family is very important for Christianity to continue & grow • Christian children are expected to care for their parents when they grow old, according to Jesus
How do parishes help with the upbringing of children? • Parishes linked to religious schools help parents keep their baptism & marriage promises about raising children knowing Christian teachings on right & wrong • Parish runs preparation classes to help parents bring up children to become full members of the Church • Run children’s liturgies to allow parents time to attend Sunday Worship • Some parishes run youth groups to help keep children busy
How do parishes help families stay together? • During Mass, priest reminds parents of marriage vows • Priests available to help couples & give counselling/advice • Church has produced leaflets to help parishes understand problems Christians face & tell them how to support the Church members • Some parishes offer financial support e.g. if a parent is ill & cannot work
What do Evangelical Protestants think about homosexuality? Believe homosexuality is wrong because… • The Bible says it is a sin • All Churches used to teach that it is wrong, even though some may now say it is not
What do Liberal Protestants think about homosexuality? Welcome homosexuals because… • The major Christian belief of love & acceptance means it should be allowed • They believe gay people should be open & honest & not tell lies, as stated in the 10 commandments
What do Catholics think about homosexuality? Believe homosexuality is not a sin but a homosexual sexual relationship is a sin. The Church asks homosexuals to be celibate as they believe the sacraments of the Church will help them do this. They believe this because… • The Bible condemns homosexual sexual activity • The Church teaches sex should be creative & unitive but it is not possible for homosexuals to have a fruitful relationship • The Church teaches people cannot help being homosexual therefore they should not be discriminated against • Jesus taught that we should show love to one another & not judge others • The Church teaches that all people are equal & should be treated this way
