How can an insulating material become charged? | By rubbing 2 insulating materials together, creating friction which is the transfer of electrons |
Balloon scenario | > When a balloon is rubbed against and insulating material a charge is induced, making it negatively charged > Then then when placed against the wall repels the electrons, moving them back, leaving the protons behind which attract the balloon (therefore the balloon 'sticks' to the wall) |
Every day Electrostatic charges | > Walking cause your feet to rub against the carpet, therefore causing build up of electrons on your body, making you charged > When you touch the door handle, the charge jumps from you through the metal handle and into the ground to be earthed |
Lightning | > Electrostatic charge builds up between the clouds, due to the movement > The negative charge is attracted to the positive ground therefore causing huge spark from the sky to the ground > This is the movement of particles through the atmosphere |
Electrostatic Painting | > The nozzle of a spray can is given a positive charge, so all paint particles leaving are positively charged > The item being painted is given a negative charge and as unlike chargers attract the positive paint is attracted to the object, creating one single layer covering the whole product > As all the particles are the same charge, they repel each other meaning they create a fine spray |
Insecticide spray | > The spray leaving the airplane is given a charge (creating a fine spray as they repel each other) > The spray is slightly attracted to the neutral ground, repelling the like charges in the ground but attracting the unlike |
Dangers of electrostatic charges | > The fuel is an insulating material, thus can cause friction with the fueling pipe if that is also insulating : this would cause the transfer of electrons and possibly a spark causing an explosion > This can be avoided by attaching a bonding line to the tank and earthing the charge built up before refueling (similar in tankers delivering fuel) |
