Matter Everything that we can see, smell and touch.
The amount of matter in an object. Mass
Volume How much space an object occupies.
Solid Has got a fixed shape.
Takes the shape of the container it is in, cannot be compressed. Liquid
Gas It has no fixed shape. It can be compressed. It can expand.
Colour, taste, smell and texture, are examples of these. These are properties we can perceive through our senses.
Hardness The property of a material that cannot be scratched easily. Diamonds are hard. Chalk is soft.
The property of a material that can be stretched and recovers its shape. Elasticity A Rubberband is elastic
The property of a material that bends well without breaking. Flexibility Paper or leather are flexible. Glass is not.
A material that is difficult to bend. It is rigid For example, glass.
Transparency Light can pass through it.
Opaque Doesn’t let light through.
How easily an object breaks. Tenacity
Force An action that changes the movement of an object or its shape.
At a distance force Causes an object to change its movement or shape without touching it.
A force that causes an object to change its movement or shape by touching it. Contact Force
Gravity A force that exists between all objects with mass. It causes things to fall to the ground.
A force that repels or attracts metal objects. Magnetism
