Needle Needles have different sizes from number 1 to 12. Big needles are used on thick fabrics such as cotton and denim. Beginners should use number 7 or 8.Needles must be sharp and free from rust. When not in use put them in a pin cushion.
Thread This varies in kind, size, color and quantity. Sewing thread should have the same color as the fabric to be sewn. Thread should be well-winded before keeping in a sewing box.
Thimble This is used to protect the finger when sewing by hand. It is worn on the middle finger to push the needle while sewing. It is usually made up of plastic, aluminum or silver. Select one that fits your finger well.
Pins These are used in putting pieces of cloth together before basting or to keep the pattern in place when cutting the material. Pins must be fine, sharp, and with pointed ends. Pl ace pins onto the pincushions when not in use. Never leave pins on the table or floor to avoid accidents
Pincushion This looks like a tomato with hair or cotton padding. Pins and needles are stuck onto it before keeping in the sewing box.
Emery Bag This is like a pincushion but much smaller. It contains fine sand or ground ceramics. Needles and pins are repeatedly pierced on it to remove rust. Remember that an emery bag is not a place for pins and needles. Keep it dry and clean in the sewing box when not in use.
Shears These are pair of scissors used for cutting fabrics. Shears are usually 6 inches or more in length, with handles that fir the thumb and the rest of the fingers.
Seam Ripper A small sewing notion that usually has two points, one sharp and one that is protected to avoid damaging the fabric. This is used to rip unwanted stitches.
Tape Measure This is used to measure the cloth as well as in taking body measurements. It is 60 inches long with lines and numbers on both sides.
Pencil and Tailors Chalk These are used to make patterns. Pencil and tailor’s chalk come in different colors and are well used especially on dark colored materials.
Gauge Like the ruler the gauge is also a measuring tool. It is used to make even hems and seams.
Ruler This is used to measure and mark patterns especially on straight lines.
