Hungarian Uprising- 1956 CAUSES - USSR had invaded Hungary at the end of the war, helping to install a communist government- Rakosi - Rakosi ruled as a brutal dictatorship - Imprisoned 200,000 political leaders - Killed 2000 of them - Allowed them to control Hungary's economy through comecon - Hungary couldn't trade with the West, leading to a poor standard of living and shortage of goods
Hungarian Uprising- 1956 EVENT - Huge demonstrations forced Rakosi out, Nagy took over - Tried to introduces changes like free elections & withdrawing Hungary from the Warsaw Pact - Krushchev didn't like this- sent 20,000 troops & 6000 tanks to invade to put a stop to the uprising
Hungarian Uprising- 1956 CONSEQUENCES - 20-30,000 Hungarians killed & 200,000 fled - Nagy replaced by Kadar who eventually had Nagy executed - USSR sent out warnings to other satellite states - West were horrified & became more determined to contain communism
