Damage in fishing industry 1 The current estimate for direct losses in the fisheries sector is around 520 million US dollars. 1.Cost of repairs of other damages to the fisheries sector, such as to aquaculture operations, fishing industry infrastructure and harbours are estimated to be in excess of US 200 million.
Damage in fishing industry 2 111,073 fishing vessels were destroyed or damaged, with an estimated replacement cost of 161 million US dollars.
Damage to tourism Tourism in Indonesia fell by 16% in December to January.
Damage to agriculture At least 116,000 acres of land within Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, Maldives and Indonesia was destroyed. These lands are polluted by sanitisation by the sea water or debris. The saline levels in the soil was too high and deemed the crop soil unfit to cultivate upon.
Number of deaths an estimated 230000-250000people died and many more are missing.
Impact on education Approximately 41000 students and 2,500 teachers died or went missing. 71% of primary schools were damaged or destroyed.
Psychological and emotional impacts In Sri Lanka 39% of children had post traumatic Stress Disorder(PSTD).
