Particle nature of matter Our world is made up of materials of all sorts Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space Matter is all things that we can see, feel and smell in our daily living Matter is the stuff all around us Chemistry is the study of matter
Properties of matter Matter is made up of tiny particles(atoms& molecules) Particles of matter are in constant motion each substance has unique particles that are different from other substances Temperature affects the speed of the particles. The higher the temperature, the faster the speed of the particles
Continued... There are empty spaces between the particles of matter that are very small compared to themselves
The movement of particles Brownish motion - the random movement of particles
Energy is... Energy is available power. It is the ability to do work
Phases of matter 3 phases - solid, liquid, gas Phase of a substance depends on how much energy that substance "contains"
Heat Heat is a type of energy, so the amount of energy a substance contains can be changed by heating or cooling it ( by adding or removing heat)
Table to show comparison of matter
Movement of particles Movement of particles depend on temperature and how much energy they have
Compressibility Compressibility of particles depend on how closely packed the molecules are and the phase it is in
Soild It holds its shape Fixed volume Particles are close together Vibrate in fixed position
Liquid Shape of container Free surface Fixed volume Particles are fairly close
Gas Shape of container Volume of container Particles are far apart
Melting It is the process by which a substance changes from the Soild phase to a liquid phase
Boiling A phase transition from the liquid state to the gas state, usually occurring when a liquid is heated to its boiling point
Evaporation To change from a liquid or solid state into vapor gas
Condensation The process by which a gas cools and becomes a liquid
Freezing ( solidigication) To become hardened into ice or into a solid body; to change from the Soild state by loss of heat
Temperature line A temperature line is a method of showing the changes in phase of a substance as energy changes.
An example of a temperature line
An explanation of the example A - melting point if energy is added , freezing point if energy is being taken away - melting and freezing point is the same thing
A diagram showing air pressure's in influence on boiling and freezing point
Energy involved in phase changes Solid particles with little energy - ➡️(Add energy) liquid particles with more energy Liquid particles with more energy ➡️ ( take away energy) solid particles with little energy
More.... Liquid particles with more energy ( add energy) ➡️ gas particles with lots of energy Gas particles with lots of energy ( take away energy) ➡️ liquid particles with less energy
Sweating It cools us down and keeps our body temperature constant. Sweat is released from sweat glands on our skin and exists as a liquid. When this sweat heats up, either from our body temperature or from the sun, it evaporates, changing from a liquid to gas. Heat energy is added. This removal of heat energy from our bodies helps to cool us down
Wine cooler The wine cooler is wet and therefore is covered in liquid water. The wine bottle is warm Heat energy from the wine heats up the water on the surface of the cooler and it evaporates The liquid water gains energy while the wine loses energy and it cools.
