what items can be covered by copyright? creative work such as images, audio, video, apps, games and written work like books
does the author have to register their work for copyright protection? no, copyright is automatically granted to creative work
what rights are given to the author of copyrighted work? the right to decide who can use, edit, make copies of, share, sell or display/perform their work
what do you need to do in order to use copyrighted work? get permission from the author and give credit (attribution)
what would happen if you used copyrighted work without permission? you could face an unlimited fine and up to 10 years in prison
can you use copyright work for education? yes, provided it is only for eduction and not released into the public domain
what does attribution mean in creative commons? you must give credit to the orignal author and say that the work is theirs
what does non-comercial mean in creative commons? you cannot make any money from the product, including selling it or using it to advertise a paid product or service
what does no derivatives mean in creative commons? you cannot make any changes to the original product
what does share alike mean in creative commons? you must allow other people to use whatever you produce using the product under the same terms
what is creative commons? a law like copyright but permission is automatically given for others to use the work provided they follow the terms the author sets
do you have to register your work to be creative commons? yes - usually this is done by including the cc terms alongside your product e.g. in a text box under an image
what would happen if you broke the terms of a cc product? the same punishments as breaking copyright law would apply - an unlimited fine and up to 10 years in prison
can an idea be protected by copyright? no, only work that has been created is given protection
what is trademark? a law designed to protect a company's identity
what does trademark cover? business names, slogans, logos and product names
does a company have to register for trademark protection? no, but they can and this can mean it is easier to settle any disputes
