Name and describe the cutting action of five methods of cutting off material 1.Hacksawing -saw cuts only on the forward stroke -reciprocating, mounted to floor 2. Bandsawing -endless, one way continuous in one direction; widely used 3. Abrasive cutting -cuts material with thin, abrasive wheel revolving at high speed, most metals and glass/ceramics, can be dry or with cutting fluid 4.Cold sawing -similar blade to wood cutting, but produces very accurate cuts and suitable for cutting aluminum, brass, copper, machine steel and stainless steel 5. Friction sawing -burning process by which a saw band is run at high speeds to burn or melt through metal - not good for solid metals but good for structural or honeycombed parts
What is the purpose of roller guide brackets? -provide rigidity for a section of the blade and can be adjusted to accommodate various widths of material. -should be adjusted to just clear the width of the work being cut
How tight should the blade tension handle be adjusted? -should be adjusted to prevent it from wandering or twisting --as tightly as possible with one hand
Of what material are saw blades made? -high speed tungsten -high speed molybdenum steel
What pitch blade is recommended for: a. large sections? b. Thin sections? c. General-purpose sawing? a. coarse 4-pitch blade b. 14 pitch blade c. 10 pitch blade
Why should two teeth of a saw blade be in contact with the work at all times? If fewer than two teeth are in contact with the work , the work can be caught in the tooth space (gullet) which will cause the teeth of the blade to strip or break.
In what direction should the teeth of a saw blade point? toward the motor end of the machine
How should the workpiece be set for sawing partially cut work with a new saw blade? Rotate the work one-half turn in the vise to prevent the new blade from jamming in the cut
What may happen if too fast a blade speed is used? -Saw teeth will dull quickly and cause inaccurate cuts
How can a vise be checked for squareness? -with a square to make it is at right angles to the saw blade
How should the roller guide brackets be set for cutting work? -until they just clear both sides of the material to be cut
Explain how thin work should be held in a vise. -Hold the material flat in the vise to prevent the saw teeth from stripping -also can be placed between two pieces pf wood or soft material
What precaution should be used for holding short work in a vise? -place a short piece pf the same thickness in the opposite end of the vise, to prevent vise from twisting when tightened
