neurogenesis The process by which new neurons are formed in the brain.
split brain A condition resulting from surgery that isolates the brain's two hemispheres by cutting the fibres in the corpus callosum connecting them.
corpus callosum The large band of neural fibres connecting the brain hemispheres and carrying messages between them.
Roger Sperry American neuropsychologist who won the 1981 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for his work with split-brain research. His research increased our understanding of the lateralization of brain function.
Michael Gazzaniga One of the world's leading researchers in cognitive neuroscience. He has made important advances in our understanding of functional lateralization in the brain and how the cerebral hemispheres communicate with one another.
brain lateralization Each brain hemisphere has its own distinct functions, known as lateralization. The left hemisphere appears to dominate the functions of speech, language processing and comprehension, and logical reasoning, while the right is more dominant in spatial tasks like vision-independent object recognition.
