Describe power hacksaws, their operation, application and attachments. Classes as a cut off machine - also called reciprocating saw - can cut in one direction only - quickly being replaced by the horizontal band saw
Describe band saws, their operation, application and attachments. use a continuous steel band with cutting teeth on one edge - greater cutting efficiency because the blade cuts with no wasted motion at all times
Describe abrasive cut-off saws, their operation, application and attachments. uses thin abrasive wheels to cut hardened metals and materials like glass, brick and stone.
What are the 2 types of band saws? Horizontal Band Saw - used to cut material to length Contour Band Saw (Vertical Band Saw) - used to cut irregular or complex profiles
Define: Blade Pitch The number of saw teeth per inch
Define: Blade Kerf The width of cut the blade makes in the workpiece
Define: Blade Gauge The thickness of the body of the blade behind the teeth
Define: Blade Width The distance from the tip of the tooth to the back of the blade
Define: Blade Set The way the individual teeth are bent out of line with the blade body. This causes the blade to make a wider cut so the body of the blade doesn't bind
Define High Carbon Steel band saw blades: -Used on easy to machine ferrous metals. -Inexpensive. -Comes in two styles, hard-backed and flexible-backed General purpose blade used for cutting soft and hard materials
Define Bi-metal band saw blades: High speed steel welded to an alloy steel back. Allow faster cutting speeds and last longer than carbon steel blades. Specialized cutting of tool steel, alloy steel and other tough materials
Define Tungsten Carbide saw blades: Have carbon tungsten tipped teeth. Allows for faster, smoother cutting. Ideal for cutting stainless steel, and most other metals
What is the Standard Tooth Form? - Has a Zero degree rake angle - Teeth are evenly spaced - Used for general purpose cutting where a fine finish and accurate cut are required.
What is the Hook Tooth Form? - Has a positive rake angle - Faster cutting rates using less pressure. - Used on soft metals, wood and plastics.
What is the Skip Tooth Form? - Has a Zero degree rake angle - Wider spacing between the teeth - Large gullet provides more chip space - Used for soft material of workpieces with a thick cross-section
What is the formula to calculate the band saw blade length? π x Diameter of one pulley + 2x center distance
Define Friction sawing: Cuts steel by generating enough heat to soften the steel immediately ahead of the blade allowing the teeth to cut. The blade runs at 50 to 100 times the normal cutting speed. Up to 15,000 SFPM
When using an Abrasive Cut=Off Saw, what type of abrasive grit would be used to cut steel and most other metals? Aluminum Oxide
When using an Abrasive Cut=Off Saw, what type of abrasive grit would be used to cut Non Ferrous Metals? Silicon Carbide
When using an Abrasive Cut=Off Saw, what type of abrasive grit would be used to cut Ceramic, Stone and Brick? Diamond
What is the purpose of roller guide brackets on a band saw? -provide rigidity for a section of the blade and can be adjusted to accommodate various widths of material. -should be adjusted to just clear the width of the work being cut
How tight should the blade tension handle be adjusted on a band saw? -should be adjusted to prevent it from wandering or twisting --as tightly as possible with one hand
What pitch blade is recommended for: a. large sections? b. Thin sections? c. General-purpose sawing? a. Large sections = coarse 4 pitch blade b. Thin sections = 14 pitch blade c. General Purpose = 10 pitch blade
Why should two teeth of a saw blade be in contact with the work at all times? If fewer than two teeth are in contact with the work , the work can be caught in the tooth space (gullet) which will cause the teeth of the blade to strip or break.
In what direction should the teeth of a saw blade point? toward the motor end of the machine
What may happen if too fast a blade speed is used? -Saw teeth will dull quickly and cause inaccurate cuts
How can a vise be checked for squareness? -with a square to make it is at right angles to the saw blade
How should the roller guide brackets be set for cutting work? -until they just clear both sides of the material to be cut
Explain how thin work should be held in a vise. -Hold the material flat in the vise to prevent the saw teeth from stripping -also can be placed between two pieces pf wood or soft material
What precaution should be used for holding short work in a vise? -place a short piece pf the same thickness in the opposite end of the vise, to prevent vise from twisting when tightened
