State in words Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation | Any two particles experience mutually attractive gravitational forces along the line joining them. The magnitude of these forces is directly proportional to the product of the two masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their centres of mass. |
Explain why newton's law of universal gravitation is constant with Newton's third law of motion | Newtons 3rd law states: if object A exerts a force on object B, then object B will exert an equal but opposite force. Universal gravitational law: the gravitational force between two masses is attractive, forces are oppositely directed and the two forces will be equal magnitides |
Explain why a satellite is able to remain in a circular orbit outside the Earth's atmosphere | The gravitational attraction between the earth and the satellite provides the force causing the centripetal acceleration. this causes the satellites to continually change direction towards the centre of the earth, hence the circular path. It is assumed that the mass of the satellite is much less than the mass of the earth |
Explain why the satellite travels with uniform circular motion in a fixed orbit. | the gravitational force between the satellite and the earth provides the force to keep the satellite in orbit. Since this force is directed towards the centre of the earth, it is at right angles to the velocity of the satellite, but doesn't alter it's speed. Hence the motion is uniform cicular motion. |
