Booting a Computer Booting is a start up sequence that starts the operating system of a computer when it is turned on. A boot sequence is the initial set of operations that the computer performs when it is switched on. Every computer has a boot sequence.
Performing Basic Computer Tasks The operating system performs basic computer tasks, such as managing the various peripheral devices such as the mouse, keyboard and printers. For example, most operating systems now are plug and play devices such as printers will automatically be detected.
Provides a User Interface This is how the user interacts with the software. There are two main types, the command line and a graphical user interface. Command- typing commands to perform specific tasks. Graphic- uses a mouse to access windows, icons and menus.
Provides File Management The file management system allows the user to perform tasks: creating files, renaming files, coping and moving files, and deleting files. The operating system keeps track of where files are on the hard drive. Two types are File Allocation Table and New Technology File Systems.
Handles System Resources The operating system handles system resources like the computer's memory and sharing of the CPU. Programs and input methods are constantly competing for the attention of the CPU. It ensures that each application gets the necessary resources it needs.
